The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment has told the House of Representatives that it does not maintain any bank account outside the shores of Nigeria.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Sani Gwarzo, who appeared before the House Committee on Public Accounts on Friday, stated that the ministry had never operated any foreign bank account either in the United Kingdom or anywhere in the world.

Gwarzo stated this while defending an audit query issued by the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation, noting that the foreign account being ascribed to the ministry was owned by a group of small commodity owners being supervised by the ministry. He pointed out that the account in question, which had about $47,404 was not a government account but a self-level account kept with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The PS also stated that though he was not in the ministry during the period, the books of the ministry showed that it served as trustees to the 44 small commodity owners who were involved in the processing and export of small commodities. He said the ministry was presently working to increase the number of small commodity owners from 44 to about 160.The committee, however, directed officials of CBN and the group to appear before the committee for further explanation. All rights reserved.
