disease condition known as shingles is also known as Herpes zoster. It is caused by the same virus that is responsible for causing chicken pox. The virus that causes the disease is more properly known as varicella-zoster virus , and its initial infection causes chicken pox. After the illness has resolved, the virus goes into a latent or dormant phase where it goes to hibernate in the root of the dorsal ganglia, meaning at a specific location in the back of the body.
This infection does not threaten life but like we have seen above, the rashes it causes are usually painful. They can erupt in any part of the body but frequently, only a small part of the body is involved. They can emerge in the right side or the left and pain is usually the first symptom that people complain about. And there are those who experience the pain associated with this condition without ever actually developing the rash.
Typically, the rash appears a few days after the onset of pain. The rash may appear reddish in a light-skinned person but multiple collections of blisters in a person who is dark-skinned. The blisters clearly contain fluid which is often clear but may become somewhat milky in appearance if bacteria get the chance to infect them. These blisters usually break open after a couple of days and form crusts around themselves.
Other people who can get this infection are those who have had organ transplantation and are on medications to prevent the rejection of such transplanted organs. Those other people on steroid therapy for a long period of time, like is seen in some skin conditions and intractable asthma may also stand an increased risk of developing this condition. This infection may be preventable by taking the chicken pox vaccine in childhood.
The complications of this condition are unique to it. Shingles occurring in or around an eye can cause an individual the loss of his vision and blindness in addition to being responsible for causing significant eye pain. In some other people, the pain from shingles can linger for a long time after the characteristic blisters have cleared.
