I remember Prof Tunde Dare from America used to call me and say that the way he was looking at the whole thing was that we were moving towards another June 12 and midway into the announcement of the results an attempt was made to abort the continuation of the announcement of the results the same way Abiola’s results was aborted.
Transportation cost has gone up as much as 200 per cent. Someone earning N50,000 may probably spend as much as N25,000 on transportation to work, how would he survive on N25,000 balance for the month? I have added N40,000 each as allowances to my workers at all levels because I pity them when I think of how would they survive under this current dispensation.
The Guardian Newspaper was banned and the publisher, Alex Ibru, was shot and he didn’t recover from it till he died. He paid the prize for his paper, The Guardian, standing strongly for democratic norms. I believe so because the last election was one that I couldn’t believe could be a repetition of what happened on June 12, 1993. In the last election, a Muslim-Muslim ticket was supposed to fall because people were dying to collect their own money, there was no fuel, the country was almost collapsing. But Nigeria rose. This is something about resilience in Nigerians and I praise them.
Journalists are being haunted for doing their job and this is in the same Tinubu’s government that journalists fought for. What would you advise Tinubu to do as regards this? We formed the Nigerian Press Organisation made up of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria , Nigeria Guild of Editors and Nigeria Union of Journalists worked to ensure that we have code of conduct for our people.
