The most widely read newspaper in Nigeria

In narrating her mother’s experience to me, a lady wrote, “After my dad died some years back, my mother didn’t want to stay in the village anymore. Said she dreaded staying alone. Through the help of my uncle , we found a family in the city that my mother could work for as a domestic assistant.

According to her, the couple has five children and the eldest is about 13 years old. She said the first time she was scolded by the children’s father was the day the 13-year-old reported her for not polishing his shoes. Another story she told was how the family’s 10-year-old daughter would often summon her to “I have finished, come and flush the toilet.” And the girl was about to set off to secondary school. Then came the daily morning routine of carrying down their school bags and lunch boxes.

Same routine when they were back from school, they walked straight upstairs, leaving their school bags and empty lunch boxes in the car for the domestic help to carry.
