Kafanchan in the southern parts of Kaduna State is the destination of my latest field trip. I want to see and feel what’s on the ground in this town located in the Kaduna South senatorial zone. Kafanchan is the headquarters of Jemaa Local Government Area. If there’re two places in Southern Kaduna that are in the news regularly for the now well-known reasons, Kafanchan is one of them.

If they go anywhere in Southern Kaduna at all, it’s when they’re herded into government vehicles to be part of official events. So, how they establish facts and confidently assert that it’s “suspected Fulani herdsmen” that kill villagers, or “unknown gunmen” that kill people is a question all of us should ask our ‘trusted’ news sources. Any media station that reports on Southern Kaduna but holds a contrary view should counter me.

When I visited on this occasion, I headed into the town of Kafanchan through the Keffi-Kwoi axis of this area. The two-lane road abandoned for decades and whose surface resembles the board of ayo game is now being reconstructed as a huge expressway. Kafanchan is relatively large, but one might not get this impression travelling on the Kwoi-Ungwan Rimi-Emir Road towards the Railway roundabout where the bust of the former Kaduna State Governor, Ibrahim Yakowa, is erected.
