SCENES of destruction, death, and human misery from the 17-month-old Russian invasion of Ukraine continue to assault

the sensibilities of people across the world. Recent footage of the elderly, women, and children, including a 95-year-old World War II female survivor, killed or injured by Russian missiles fired on apartment buildings, accentuates the urgency for the international community to accelerate diplomatic efforts to stop the carnage. The brief rebellion by Wagner, a Russian mercenary group, introduced another macabre dimension to the fruitless war and the possibility of instability within Russia.

Earlier, the Russian defence ministry said Ukrainian troops and depots storing foreign-made armoured vehicles were hit using sea-based “long-range precision weapons.” Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed a “tangible” response to the “terrorist attacks.” Although neither side has given casualty figures deemed accurate by experts and the media, the toll has been heavy, and rising. According to several reports, losses on both sides have been especially heavy in recent weeks of the ongoing Ukrainian counter-offensive with several hundred deaths reported every day on the battlefields in East Ukraine.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights verified as of June 18 9,083 civilian deaths and, 15,779 others injured, but said the true numbers were likely to be substantially higher. By July, reported the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, there were 6.33 million Ukrainian refugees, 5.96 million of them in Europe.
