new bill to increase the retirement age of teachers across the country from 60 to 65 years would have some negative impact on the younger generation that want to venture into the profession, experts have said.

The bill titled, ‘Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Bill 2020,’ which is also seeking to increase the possible years of service from 35 to 40 years, had stakeholders advising the government to improve teachers’ welfare packages for better performance rather than focusing on age increment.

A teacher with Royal Kiddies International School, Abuja, Muhammed Ibrahim notes that extending retirement age isn’t actually a bad idea so long as the person doing it is still fit for the job. “Let’s look at it from another perspective, this time I will consider it to be a bad idea because increasing the retirement age is equal to not giving the young teachers a chance to be recruited in the teaching profession.
