A cancer survivor, Atinuke Lawal, has urged the government to subsidise drugs for cancer patients in the country,

Lawal, at the end of the year programme organised by Atinuke Cancer Foundation at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital on Thursday, also advocated the inclusion of cancer treatment in the National Health Insurance Scheme. “Cancer treatment is a lot better now in Nigeria; when I was going through my own treatment, LUTH was like a ghost house. It wasn’t a place I liked coming to, once I get to the gate, I’m doing the sign of a cross, because this place was not just beautiful, but now we have better equipment, we have the facilities now to treat people.

“We are not yet there, but it can get better, which means that the advocacy we are doing is getting to the government and they are doing something. The government can, however, subsidise drugs for cancer patients. The advocacy should not be stopped. People should know that cancer is not from an attack from the enemy, it is a scourge all over the world.

“We are advocating the inclusion of cancer treatment in health insurance to help the patients. A lot of people feel cancer patients will die, and because of that, they are not ready to put their money in cancer treatment. If there is health insurance in place for cancer patients, it will help the patients in getting quality health care and will also help them to get subsidised drugs,” Lawal said.
