Stray bullets: Dwellers in Ogun border towns tackle Customs over alleged killings

Parents of slain farmer, Kehinde Ogunji, have yet to get over the killing of their son by Customs men in Iseluland, Ogun State.

The father told our correspondent that his son was not a troublesome person but was killed by the uniformed men.

“Kehinde and I were on our motorcycle. He was the one riding while I sat at the back on our way home. Suddenly, a bullet hit Kehinde and we both fell down. In the last 12 months based on reported cases, about 12 persons mostly students and teenagers lost their lives to stray bullets fired by men of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun Command 1, while chasing smugglers in the border areas in the state. Also, others sustained various degrees of injury through accidental discharges from the Customs.

She narrated, “My husband was a barber. He left home that day to seek assistance from his friends at the Oodua People’s Congress’ base to take me to hospital. It was later that news got to me that Customs stormed the town and started shooting. In the process, I was told that a stray bullet hit him.” Other people who lost loved ones to stray bullets from Customs men are still mourning their loss helplessly.

On September 17, 2019, two persons were crushed to death in Akinale village in the Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State when men of the NCS were chasing a bus conveying cartons of turkey. Also, on December 19, 2019, hell was let loose in the state capital when a stray bullet fired by one of the Customs men, Ogun Command 1, hit and killed an unidentified motorcyclist in Lafenwa.

On April 26, 2020, the uniformed men from NCS, Ogun Area Command I, also reportedly shot dead a farmer during a clash with suspected smugglers along Iselu and Igua communities in the Yewa North Local Government Area of the state.

This is Evil, biko let humanity assist this man to get justice from those who killed this innocent farmer, this is not acceptable at all.

Maiwada should face a firing squad. His arrogance and I don't care attitude is so infuriating. In all this story I didn't read about a smuggler being killed. Why are the senators and house of reps members of this community quiet? Shame on them!!!
