‘Sporadic shooting’ and other faulty usages we inherit from the media

Apart from providing news and other useful information, the mass media offer readers an opportunity to improve on their English. In most cases, the editor and his team do a lot of work to ensure that the stories they publish are in good order in terms of grammar, vocabulary and phonology. Besides, different writers flaunt styles that discerning readers can adopt or adapt in their own writings.

I indulged in this relatively lengthy introduction to establish the fact that some of the errors that readers complain about in papers and other platforms are accidental. This is not an excuse because producing clean copies appears to be the contract the editor has with the public. More importantly, there are disturbing instances of carelessness and ignorance that breed some recurrent errors in the media offerings in Nigeria.
