S’West AGs demand exclusive list’s review, state police - Punch Newspapers

The attorneys-general of the South-West states have reiterated the call for fiscal federalism and the need for a holistic review of the exclusive legislative list in the 1999 Constitution with emphasis on the need to devolve more legislative items to the states.

The AGs also affirmed their stance on the establishment of the state police service “to serve as a territorial police force to complement the Nigeria Police in law enforcement in each of the South-West states.” The AGs, in the communiqué at the end of their meeting in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on July 16, also restated their states’ commitment to financial autonomy for the judiciary and state legislatures.

The chief law officers, according to the communiqué signed by Ekiti State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Olawale Fapohunda, on behalf of his colleagues from the South-West states, also pledged to strengthen and reinforce consultations on matters relating to the harmonisation of laws in the region.
