Senate Proposes 14-Year Jail Term For Sexual Predators In Tertiary Institutions

File Photo: President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, speaks during plenary in the Senate Chamber in Abuja on September 27, 2019.The Senate on Wednesday debated two critical bills – the Sexual Harassment Bill and President Muhammadu Buhari’s Finance Bill, 2019.

According to a statement signed by the Special Assistant to President of the Senate, Ezrel Tabiowo, the bill proposes up to 14 years jail term, with a minimum of five years, without an option of fine for any educator who commits sexual offences in tertiary institutions. Senator Omo-Agege, in his lead debate, said: “the most effective way to deal with the offence of sexual harassment in our tertiary institutions is to penalise the very impropriety of the act, with or without consent.”

He, however, stressed that the bill prescribes expulsion for students who falsely accuse educators of sexual harassment.

AbbanoguTimes Wonder how many years the 'sexual predators' in the senate get?

M2elevate One smart thing also it should apply to people of power who use their positions to take advantage of unfortunate subordinates both male and female

Why 14years? It should be death penalty.

And the ones who marry underage girls, what happens to them? ThisLifeMustBalance by force!

Organizations, parastatals should be included

Good🔥🔥🙌🏾

Long overdue. Sad what a lot of ladies go through in our tertiary institutions these days.

Shouldn't it be sexual predators in general, cos last I checked, there are sexual predators in the NGRSenate DrAhmadLawan

I think this law should start from the scratch (Primary Schools) those poor creatures doesn’t know anything

It shouldn't be just Tetiary institutions alone

Why in the tertiary instructions only and not sexual predators generally?

Same should be attached to any public office

We don't have enough prisons o.

Just 14 years pere? What happened to 40 years? 50 years and please while you are at it give capital punishment to Rapists, firing squad will do

When all you need is a waec certificate to be in that house, it's given that your sense is not mature enough to raise a bill that covers all works of life where such assault occurs. So when a MD or politician doess it, do u raise a fresh bill?

How manu years for politicians who loot our common wealth

And the penalty for false accusation should be 2 years imprisonment, not just expulsion. To not think that someone would find a way to weaponize this bill, is naive.

Why only Tertiary institutions when the menace is found everywhere Schools Hospitals NASS & SA Bars & Malls Offices Worship Centers etc

A senate that passed second reading on social media bill without reading it .. the worse senate in the world .. I think it is time to scrap this senate

What of Government Money predators a.k.a Corrupt politicians? TransparencyKillsCorruption

About time.

Nigerian senate and the number 14

What about politicians who loots public find with reckless rascality, how many years will they bag. Abeg signed that law first before anything.

They are just making laws like fools

Why the conditional 'in tertiary institutions'? Are we saying for now we gotta be tolerating the predators outside the ivory towers?

How many years for you and your colleagues if found corrupt?

kikimordi you did this ❤

gombe__dopest La Boom

Only 14 years This is a joke!!

Supported.. Please pass this bill ooo..

kikimordi this is for you.. You did a great job

I hope they can also propose death by hanging for rapists too

But how many years in jail will the Senate propose for sexual offenders in the senate or in NASS? let no senator try to deceive Nigerians, pretending that sexual predation begins and ends on our university campus, and does not take place at NASS.

And 24years for any Senator that siphon or embezzle our money pls do it

I wonder why this deliberation took too long to implement. It’s unfortunate

pot calling kettle...

so all these threat from the mighty horny ASSU did not work?

And what’s the penalty for looters?

The same thing as same sex offenders . I c !

Senate should Propose 21 year Jail Term for Politicians found guilty of Looting Public funds

it is easier said than done NGRSenate is home of sexual predators of all time how can the law be applicable to only tertiary institutions when governors/senators are engaging in sex for employment & sex for payment of salaries, ask Abia civil servants for more information

I suggest life jail.

Issokay

Pls can you remove this last 3 words.... Let it be senate proposes 14yr jail term for ALL sexual predators!

what are they proposing for those who steal and misappropriate public fund?
