Security law 'most important' development for Hong Kong since handover: leader

Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam poses with Justice Secretary Teresa Cheng while holding copies of the new national security law during a press conference at the government headquarters in Hong Kong on July 1, 2020, on the 23rd anniversary of the city’s handover from Britain to China.

“The national security law is a turning point for Hong Kong from chaos to being governed well,” she added. The new suite of powers radically restructures the relationship between Beijing and Hong Kong, toppling the legal firewall that has existed between the city’s judiciary and the mainland’s party-controlled courts.
