Rivers United have claimed midfielder Joseph Onoja absconded from the team's camp and illegally joined Vietnamese club Becamex Binh Duong. According to a statement released by Rivers United's Director of Communications, Sammy Wejinya, Onoja was not granted permission to join Becamex Binh Duong.

'We also wish to state that we do not believe Onoja acted alone in this heinous act which depicts the highest levels of unprofessionalism and criminality. 'We don't believe Onoja acted alone as there's no way he would have received his International Transfer certificate without the knowledge of the Nigeria Football Federation . Onoja's last involvement with Rivers United was against Plateau United on January 10. He was an unused substitute in the game.
