“It is not within the power or rights of a newspaper to unilaterally and whimsically change the formal official title or the designation of the country’s President as it pleases,” presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said in a statement.Wednesday’s editorial “As a symbolic demonstration of our protest against autocracy and military-style repression, PUNCH will henceforth prefix Buhari’s name with his rank as a military dictator in the 80s, Major General, and refer to his administration as a regime, until they purge themselves of their insufferable contempt for the rule of law,” The Punch said.

The national daily criticised the president for the continued detention of Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Ibrahim el-Zakzakky and his wife and former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki by agencies of the Nigerian government despite court orders granting them bail.who had earlier said the newspaper was free to address the president whatever it chooses to address him as between the president and a major general.

But Punch has a right to protest hasn't they?

Is he not a general?

Story story. Major General was his rank during his 1st regime. So presidency can't change that....

MBuhari is an Islamist Fulani dictator and the world knows it even if Nigerians are too docile to say it. But we will never allow him get away with it just as we chased out Abacha and his family till today.

Changing it will make them approve hate speech and back date it to witch-hunt Punch

They have bot said they are changing the name, but that they choose to address him as that

Abegi! Punch is only saying the obvious. Evidently, the Major Gen dictator has refused to shed his old habits. Call a spade a spade. There is no question of rights here.

😏😏

But this social media warriors said it’s cool

So it now matters? Confusion in high places.

I think your both parents and Guardian are dead now if not you people will be guided . Ndi ara

MobilePunch did not changed the president title, they resolved to refer to MBuhari as Major General until he upholds the rule of laws. Referring to him as General is quite different from changing his official title. Why did Aso Rock 1st pretended as if they were not pained?

By the General's deeds he has changed it by himself. So he should not blame Punch newspaper

are u dss or efcc..... dey ur dey before u go receive ur own punch from PUNCH........ dont know u still exist?

But they can call him baba because he is a father?!!!...

I don't get this, is he not a major general ? Is Osinbajo not a professor ? why not remove the title professor ?!!!

The competitor trying to ride in on MobilePunch as it’s said Evil thrives when good men do nothing, the MobilePunch is using this as an ave. to campaign against d disregard for d rule of law, I ask to quote 1 tenet of rhe rule of law this admin has adhered to

Wy is everyone fighting about this; after all, what is the difference? 🤷‍♂️

Punch as an independent media has the right to personal opinion. The Nigeria presidency today is not only callous but unfortunate, dumb, wicked and insufferably unjust to the whims of the Nigeria citizens.

So you guys are clearly agents of Buhari and APC. Noted. You want to lose credibility. We will help you.

Where were you when court orders were being disobeyed or when the DSS stormed the courtroom disrespectfully and chased away the judge. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Let them change it , av u forgotten that we voted for General Muhammad Buhari not President Muhammad Buhari.

Which law are thses idiots talking about?A govt that Does not respect the rule of law now wants us to respect or obey which law?Islamic law? When you have idiots as leaders, the country will not make progress.

Because you are benefiting from the man doesn't mean you should sell your conscience. Is Nigeria better or worse than 5 years ago?.....

chaplinez70

But they have right to Thier opinions

Shuo!!!! Who says they changing the title of the president Truly, isn't he a retired Major General? Didn't he earn his rank? So what are they afraid of? Anybody can choose to call him whatever he likes so far that person earned that title.

chaplinez70 So they are pained?

chaplinez70 Is he not a major general rtd?

I'm sorry but who's so ever that is behind this Tweet is a zombie A president who spare the lives of terrorists and headsmen after killing millions and jail those who peacefully protest, a Man who disobeys court orders should be address as what?

chaplinez70 Well we can address him as we so wish he hold at titles

This are Buhari agent

And you have no right or what so ever to defend the tyrant MBuhari who's against the rule of law

I thought they said he earned it, we still call Gowon, OBJ, IBB, Abdulsalami by their titles till date

You people are mad.
