A radical departure from the existing policy is needed to enhance safety, but the candidates’ proposed reforms miss the mark.

violence is rife countrywide. Boko Haram’s two factions have expanded from the North-east to North-west and North-central states.

The new president must grapple with a broken state dominated by armed groups and socio-economic problems. This calls for a radical departure from old approaches. The drivers of banditry, violent extremism, kidnapping and other crimes must be confronted head-on through economic development plans that stem rising poverty and youth unemployment. The security and defence infrastructure also needs modernising, starting with police reform and better accountability in the military.

Disappointingly, his manifesto is not explicit on some of the most important issues. He fails to commit to the size of an increased police force and is silent on decentralising the policing system to allow sub-national units to own and fund their respective policing outfits. Atiku promises to increase the size of the police force by more than 70 per cent in line with international standards. He also commits to strategic engagements with state and non-state actors, and to removing policing from the exclusive to the concurrent list. Overall, his proposal is uninspiring and doesn’t present credible policy alternatives.

How do you know a vague promise when the person is Not yet in that exalted office for 100 days to assess how far and well he has performed on security?

Non of them have interest of nation at heart, they are just after money, power and title

I can understand & speak for OBI for non disclosure of strategy against espionage & Sabotage. APC are currently in gov't so nothing new & insecurities started with PDP which was main reason why they lost in 2015... Leave Peter Obi alone

So now what do you want us to do ehn

When obi was governor, the IG of police then; Abubakar mohammed said Anambra State is the safest in Nigeria for almost 5yrs...And I verified it too. So I believe Peter obi more.

With what Pmb has achieved vis a vis decimating Boko Haram, equipping the military with hardware, technology etc....it is either the candidate says they will continue from there or have no singular idea on the topic. Tinubu already says he will continue.

So Tinubu policy on security can’t even discuss

Mr Tinubu does not take a stance on any of the following: using private security to protect national assets; how much of the national budget should be committed to defence and security; and engaging the armed groups driving Nigeria’s crisis.
