Pregnant women lament hardship as COVID-19 compounds poverty situation punchhealthwise

As the economic hardship triggered by COVID-19 bites harder, some pregnant traders in Lagos State share how the situation is taking its toll on their health.

Mrs. Adeola Rabiu, a catfish seller, says she was excited when she became pregnant in March this year without knowing that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will make the pregnancy stressful. Sharing her experience with our correspondent, Rabiu said, “I learnt catering, but there was no money for me to start my own catering outfit. So, in 2015, my mother helped me to start a catfish business. Since that time, I have been on it even after I got married in 2018.

“The whole load of providing for the family since June has been on me. This is seriously affecting me. I no longer sleep well at night and from Monday to Saturday, I am busy.Rabiu, who said this was her first pregnancy, said it was not easy for her to raise the N13,500 she used in registering for antenatal at Shomolu General Hospital.

Another pregnant trader Mrs. Geraldine Okoh, 32, who sells vegetables at Oworonshoki said she was just struggling to do the business everyday in order to feed her family. She further says, “My husband’s painting job was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. I had to register for antenatal in a traditional birth attendant because of financial constraints.

Many countries have provided various forms of support for struggling families and businesses, but few have considered the pandemic’s disproportionate effect on women, particularly pregnant women –Experts“I never knew things will be this rough. The situation is putting a lot of pressure on me. When the nurse checked my blood pressure during my last antenatal visit, she told me to watch my blood pressure that it is beginning to rise.

“It is not easy my sister. Sometimes, we scarcely feed twice a day. Last time, I almost fainted in the market. Researchers from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, say if an expectant mother is strongly stressed over a long period of time, the risk of the unborn child developing a mental or physical illness later in life — such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or cardiovascular disease — increases.
