nagging impression that there were outsiders remote-controlling our economy, using their allies in government and there are many of us in governance who have not been de-colonised enough to appreciate independent thinking. Those enforcers like the International Monetary Fund and World Bank had a feeling that the Nigerian currency was over-valued and had to be brought to size. The so-called structural adjustment policy was not home-grown.
Politicians and our technocrats knew before now that the so-called subsidy was a scam. Those in power, if they were people-friendly, would have thought of the possible palliatives before removing the subsidy. Removal of the subsidy was not a one-day wonder. Every leader knew it was not sustainable but they all played along, enjoying the fraud, and living in denial. They refused deliberately to repair the four refineries in the country preferring a rentier system.
We need minimum governance now, impelling the drastic reduction of the cost of governance, a salary reduction of about 50 per cent for ministers, commissioners, and legislators in particular. Why should, for instance, a Nigerian legislator earn more than his compatriot in the USA? In the old Imo State, we had only 15 commissioners and two or three assistants. We had enough money to establish industries in all the local governments of the state and to build an airport.
