US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in Baghdad late on May 7 on an unannounced visit, an Iraqi government source told AFP, after he cancelled a trip to Germany amid escalating US-Iran tensions.

Pompeo said his change of plans was prompted by Iran’s intention to stage “imminent” attacks on US interests in the Middle East. Those powers include Britain — a co-signee of the pact that has historic energy interests in Iran it was forced to break under pressure from Trump. Pompeo’s visit was already promising to be a difficult one because of the sides’ diverging views on the safety of using China’s Huawei telecommunications giant in the world’s next-generation 5G networks.
