The newly-elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, and other members of the party’s new National Working Committee will be inaugurated on Friday, December 10, 2021.
Ayu, a former President of the Senate, emerged the consensus candidate for the office of the party’s national chairman after a long horse-trading among the governors of the party following a court order that suspended the party’s National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus. However, in a dramatic twist on August 26, Justice Nusirat Umar of the Kebbi State High Court sitting in Birni Kebbi in a suit No. KB/HC/M.170/2021, filed by Yayaha Usman, Abubakar Mohammad and Bashar Suleiman, reinstated Secondus as national chairman.
Our correspondent also reported that in the history of the party, none of its national chairman had served the full four years allowed by the constitution. Senator Barnabas Gemade took over from Lar and was in office between 1999 and 2001 when Chief Audu Ogbeh took over from him. Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo, a former governor of Enugu State, was merely in office for one year in 2010 as the party national chairman when he was sacked and was succeeded by Dr Haliru Mohammed, who also did not last one year before he was succeeded by Alhaji Kawu Baraje, a former national secretary of the party from Kwara State.
