Old Naira Notes: Senate Urges CBN to Extend Deadline to July 31 Sunday Aborisade in Abuja The Senate on Tuesday appealed to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CNN) to extend the deadline for the exchange of old naira no

The Senate on Tuesday appealed to the Central Bank of Nigeria to extend the deadline for the exchange of old naira notes from the January 31 deadline to July 31, 2023.

The apex bank had on October last year, said the old naira notes would cease to be legal tender as from January 31 but the Senate in December passed a resolution urging the CBN to extend the deadline to June 30. However, worried by the insistence of the apex bank that there would be no such extension, Senator Sadiq Umar moved a motion on the floor of the red chamber on Tuesday demanding the extension to July 31.

Most senators, who contributed to the debate, overwhelmingly embraced the extension, citing scarcity of the new notes both in the banks and at the various automated teller machine points across the country. The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, put the prayers in the motion to vote and the lawmakers voted in support of the extension of the deadline from January 31 to July 31.Founded on January 22, 1995, THISDAY is published by THISDAY NEWSPAPERS LTD., 35 Creek Road Apapa, Lagos, Nigeria with offices in 36 states of Nigeria , the Federal Capital Territory and around the world.

Be assured that some of your senators must have some loads of old currency in their houses looking for a means to dislodge them to the banks. CBN governor, ignore their plead. These are the people that make the people suffer. Stand on 31/1/23 deadline.

Banks and politicians frustrated the exercise...CBN not serious...poor masses will feel it more...that's Nigeria..funny.

cenbank myaccessbank for the umpteenth time, the new notes are not yet in circulation

😂

No extension! 100 days is enough to return our looted and hidden funds back to the banks.

Anyone supporting Senate in this must be an APC member. CBN gave enough time for this and hence, no excuse.

Is only a criminal that will ask for extension of old naira deposit, Senate make una respect una self no go back I stand with CBN

There should be no extension.

This is a good ideas, Nigerians are in hardship, no availability of an old notes even in the bank, and thus the sellers themselves don't accept an old notes.

Chai Thisday CNN or CBN 🤔😀

There's no need for extension. cenbank please don't extend the deadline, 31st January 2023 is sacrosanct.

And CBN should concur them. The scarcity of the new naria note is already causing hardship. You can't buy anything now in the market because the seller will not accept the old note and Banks themselves don't even have the new note. It is a problem.

All the money they have hidden and intend to use for election go cast wella..hope officialEFCC dey watch sha?

We the people don't want extensions after all we don't even have the old notes so let it be as said January, 31,2023.
