The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) has said it does not have the power to force tertiary institutions in the country to stop academic activities in order to enable students to vote during the forthcoming general elections. This was made known by the media aide to the chairman of the commission, Rotimi Oyekanmi, in an interview on Friday. Oyekanmi’s remark was towards several pleas from stakeholders that universities should declare holidays for students to collect their Permanent Voter Cards and also vote in the coming polls.

Oyekanmi’s remark was towards several pleas from stakeholders that universities should declare holidays for students to collect their Permanent Voter Cards and also vote in the coming polls. A student who spoke to SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity had lamented that with the arrangement, he would have no time to travel to his state to vote.

But speaking with PUNCH, INEC chairman’s media aide, Oyekanmi said it was beyond INEC to dictate to varsities on how to run their calender.

Let dem wait for their masters order first...

Why closing universities for election ? They should remember that they were on strike for a longer period to me what Inec should is to take Bvas to the campuses for the voting.

Election of 2015 all universities was asked 2 close. Why now. APC nd Buhari is trying 2 rigged this election

Is general election on weekdays or weekends

Don't expect free & fair credible election .. Inec already compromise

Then students should unanimously go home and vote; the spineless SUGs should make the call

Lies ,big lies . This is something that will be great f a beneficial to students that will man the future , so you have every right and power to compel them to close for the general election even state's too . Isn't the students part of the citizens of this country?

unserious country

inecnigeria are not truthful to themselves. How can students that legally registered for voting be held in universities just to stop us from voting the right person. The monster you people are growing may consume you so called leaders if you don't repent.

This is not a good excuse. Inec shouldn't look helpless here. They can as well work in synergy with NUC or Minedu to find a way out so that about 4m Nigerians will not disenfranchised. This one requires networking & collaboration. It is possible.

Why will school open on election day ffs

Make una just dey play first, so government purposely made ASUU to call off strike and made fuel unavailable,so students won’t participate in the oncoming election Abi? I know una plans but it has failed already.

The independent power inecnigeria has, they aren't using it, is it the one they don't have they'll use? Whoever requested that from them was wasting his or her time.

Common sense would have made him know that it's not safe to keep students in schools during voting days so that they wouldn't become veritable tools of destruction in the hands of those selfish and devilish politicians, that will use them unleash mayhem. You need understanding.

Why should they close Universities, or are we expecting the unexpected

But they have power to let lectures go on strike for years? 🤣🤣🤣

OfficialAPCNg at work but PeterObi will still win

What is this man saying ? Why is he talking like this now?

Na today? You see this Nigeria rebirth, it has already happen!
