The Office for Strategic Preparedness and Resilience (OSPRE), Nigeria’s national centre for the coordination of early warning and response, has warned against the use of military intervention in the ongoing situation in Niger Republic. Niger Republic is the fourth West African country to fall to a military takeover in two years after Guinea, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

August 4, 2023Niger Republic is the fourth West African country to fall to a military takeover in two years after Guinea, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

The group, in a report obtained by SaharaReporters, stated that a military intervention aimed at regime change in Niger Republic would be costly, infeasible and would lead to catastrophically counterproductive consequences for West Africa. “Nigeria would be expected to provide the backbone of any ECOWAS military intervention in Niger as it boasts the strongest armed forces in West Africa. The Nigerian military is currently deployed on internal security operations in at least 32 states of the federation, and is confronting three insurgencies in the North East, the North-West and the South-East.

Mali and Burkina Faso have already declared that an attack on the Nigerien regime would be regarded as an act of war against their countries and have indicated that they would militarily support the regime. They have also denounced the imposition of sanctions by ECOWAS on Niger. Should matters escalate, it is likely that these countries would formally announce their withdrawal from ECOWAS.

It also advised that the constitution by ECOWAS of a mission to diplomatically engage with the new regime is apt.
