Opinion: Nigeria at 60: Are there Signs of a Failed State?, By Justine John Dyikuk

Be it a failed, collapsed or fragile state, these unpalatable appellations describe a nation that is in a sorry state. As a description of countries that are in comatose, the indices of a failed state set by The Fund for Peace are measured by certain factors.

The indices of a failed state, namely: the loss of control of over territory or monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force therein, touches on the security of lives and property. This should be the number one agenda of every government. Elder statesmen like former President Olusegun Obasanjo; Noble Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka; and former chief of Army staff, Lieutenant General Theophilus Danjuma , have raised alarm over the intractable spate of insecurity in the land.

The third factor is the inability to provide public services.
