NHRC, UNHCR, Sensitizes Security Personnel Against Classifying Petty Offences As Crime

The National Human Rights Commission and United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees on Monday sensitise security personnels against criminalisation and classification of petty offences as crime.

Ojukwu said that the one of the key advocacy component of the project was the Protection of Persons of Concern through Human Rights Monitoring in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in selected LGAs of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states. “The Commission, through the Human Rights Monitors conduct regular visits to prisons, police and military detention facilities as well as other detention facilities to critically assess detention conditions.

He said other issue highlighted was absence of documentation, adding that many Displaced Population lose and/or are deprived of their legal documentation, which puts them at risk of harassment, arrests and even exploitation and infringement of their fundamental rights.
