Newspaper Headlines: Tinubu, Shettima object to Obi’s votes in Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Enugu, Imo | TheCable

April 15, 2023 6:00 AMReports on Saturday’s supplementary elections in 24 states dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapersThe Punch reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission is set to prosecute over 200 persons arrested for various electoral offences during the 2023 elections. The newspaper says Mike Inelagwu, Benue commissioner for information, said over 5,000 people were killed in the state within seven years.

The Nation says Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, is contesting the votes declared for the Labour Party in 630 polling units in Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Enugu, and Imo states. The newspaper reports that Hope Uzodinma, governor of Imo, has won the governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress in the state.

Daily Trust reports that uncertainty is trailing the May 3 population census as the National Population Commission has postponed the training of ad-hoc staff for the exercise. The newspaper says Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria , has said the International Monetary Fund’s 3.2 percent growth projection for Nigeria confirms the country’s economic policies are working.

The Guardian reports that the United Nations Children’s Fund has lamented the inability to rescue the students of Government Girls Secondary School Chibok in Borno, who are still in captivity. The newspaper says Ahmadu Fintiri, governor of Adamawa, and Aisha Binani, candidate of the APC, will know their fate today at the supplementary elections.

Daily Sun reports that senators-elect from the southern part of the country are collaborating to ensure that a lawmaker from the south is elected senate president. The newspaper says property worth millions of naira was gutted by fire at Ojoto Market located at Azikiwe/Ojoto roundabout in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday night.
