A public notice by the state Ministry of Justice stated that “the two had been registered in the ministry’s sex offender register and as well published on all social media platforms of the ministry.” A youth and resident at Irona Ado Ekiti, in the former neighbouhood of Adeyanju, Ms Bimbo Adeyemi, said the country’s legal system was too lenient with rapists.
The National President, Ado Progressives Union, Chief Sunday Ayoola, who said rape was a taboo in the olden days, said no human being in his right senses ought to commit rape. He described the initiative as a right step in the right direction. “If it had been done elsewhere and the state realised that it would serve as a deterrent, I think there is nothing wrong with it especially if the rapists were duly prosecuted and there is no appeal against their conviction. In some countries, rape attracts death penalty. Rape is not a good thing. What could make anybody to commit rape?
The council boss noted that ignorance and some individuals’ desire to protect identities of perpetrators and their families prevented many rapists from prosecution. A community leader at Ijero Ekiti, Seun Ibitoye, who corroborated Fajuyi’s position said, “Some community leaders are equally responsible for sexual violence. My advice to them is to be careful with the way they handle rape issues in their communities. The same is applicable to elders, monarchs and political office holders who always take advantage of young ones.”
He stated that rapists had no place in Ekiti in furtherance of Governor Fayemi administration’s zero-tolerance for rape which began during its first term with the domestication of Gender-based Violence Law.
