There was pandemonium at the premises of the Central Bank of Nigeria, along Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom State, as police operatives

reportedly fired several canisters of teargas on thousands of people, mainly depositors, who thronged the bank to deposit their old naira notes.

Prior to the incident, frustrated and angry youths were alleged to have planned to raze down a bank opposite the CBN branch. Akwa Ibom Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, when contacted confirmed the incident. He claimed that the police intervened when the crowd was becoming riotous but he denied the use of teargas by the law enforcement agents.

Nigerian Central Bank Disregards Supreme Court Order, Says Old Naira Notes No More Legal Tender | Sahara ReportersThe Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has declared that the old Naira Notes of N200, N500 and N1000 have ceased to be legal tender in Nigeria since the 10th of February, 2023. SaharaReporters had reported that most banks customers were confused on Monday as commercial banks rejected the old Naira notes they wanted to deposit. This is despite a Supreme Court ruling stopping the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from implementing the February 10, 2023 deadline for swapping of old Naira notes for the newly redesigned Naira notes.
