Prof Olutoyin Jegede, a professor of Literature in English, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, tells SIMON UTEBOR about her childhood experiences, passion, marriage, profession, ideals and lifestyle

I think it is an experience I won’t forget in a hurry because it actually charted for me a course of life, which I later followed because it was that very school, Baptist High School, Iwo, that I eventually attended.I want to say that my interaction with one of my teachers in that school actually gave me a leeway to what I wanted to do in life.

Therefore, if okada and other words are brought into the dictionary, other people who interact will know okada is a Nigerian variety, so other people who may not be familiar with that will come to understand what it means and that way, language will expand. The essence of language itself is for communication and the more words you understand in a particular language, the better.

It is really shameful that Nigeria that used to be at the forefront in educational attainment is being rated low these days. The attitude of government to university education is what is responsible for this. There is no funding and no encouragement for those working there. There are universally acceptable standards in higher institutions all over the world.

The issue has always been part of the system and unfortunately, many people do it and go away scot free, so more and more people get involved in it. I also want to look at it from a robust perspective; not only from lecturer to student, male to female, but also some females have a way of harassing male lecturers. It will help if there are standards. I know that in some institutions, there are standards for dressing – there are dress codes – codes of behaviour, etc.
