As the country commemorated the Democracy Day on Friday, Hafsat Abiola-Costello, daughter of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief Moshood Abiola, said one of

her father’s ideals was alleviating poverty in Nigeria.Hafsat spoke at a webinar organised by the Lagos State Government tagged ‘Learning from the Past, Shaping the Future.’

However, the then-military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida , nullified the election. Abiola was subsequently arrested and detained. He died at age 60 on July 7, 1998, a day he was due to be released from prison, under suspicious circumstances. She said, “I think that sometimes we forget that the June 12 struggle was about addressing poverty in Nigeria. The campaign slogan that my father had was that Nigerians would say farewell to poverty. However, we still have poverty across Nigeria and we perhaps have more poor than the number in 1993 because we have not been able to put in place an inclusive economic system.
