Mixed reactions have trailed the decision of Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to exclude Nigeria Professional Football League players from the team’s list for the 2022 World Cup qualifying double-header against the Central African Republic. In a chat with The PUNCH, Kwara United captain, Chris Nwanze, rued the missed opportunity by the NPFL players to gain experience with the national team.
“One thing with this kind of game is that it helps us players to experience international football and also, we gain exposure when we are part of the team,” Nwanze told The PUNCH. “The coach has made it very clear that he does not believe in the NPFL players. Since it’s his philosophy, you cannot take it away from him that the NPFL players are not good enough to fit into the Super Eagles. For me, I think the majority of the players are already in camp for the four-nation tourney and I think there is no cause for alarm because there isn’t anybody that he wanted to invite that is not in that camp.
The coach should be allowed to do his job. World cup qualifiers is not time to scout for players.
