Well, unity is too strong a word. It is improbable that Nigeria will ever enjoy unity in any semblance of the word. What I’m pondering instead is whether defections by politicians provide a strong clue that disintegration isn’t in Nigeria’s immediate future.
Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the Director of Publicity and Advocacy of the Northern Elders Forum, couldn’t have been blunter in characterising the failure of Buhari’s presidency. “Is there any Nigerian who is not disappointed in President Buhari including diehard APC people?” Baba-Ahmed said during an appearance on Arise TV’s ‘The Morning Show’ on Tuesday.
Moreover, the same people who put Buhari in office in 2015 enthusiastically saw to his reelection in 2019, with faltering health and all. So, the APC can’t logically distance itself from the failures of the Buhari presidency. And that includes his nepotism. Fani-Kayode’s defection is certainly monumental in making this point. As a strident critic of Buhari and the APC, I don’t think he had an equal. Neither among Buhari’s political opponents nor journalistic pundits. Fani-Kayode was caustic and often incisive in making the case that Buhari is nepotistic and his administration incompetent. And the former aviation minister swore five years ago never to rejoin the APC again.
