Mali junta 'regrets' ECOWAS sanctions

FILE: Malian soldiers parade as they arrive by military vehicle at Independence Square in Bamako on August 18, 2020, after rebel troops seized Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse in a dramatic escalation of a months-long crisis. - Neighbouring states in West Africa, along with France, the European Union and the African Union, condemned the sudden mutiny and warned against any unconstitutional change of power in the fragile country.

Mali was rocked by coups in August 2020 and May 2021 and swathes of the vast desert nation country are not under government control due to a jihadist insurgency that emerged in the north in 2012. The Economic Community of West African States sanctions “do not sufficiently take into account the deep aspirations of the Malian people and the efforts made on a daily basis by the transition authorities,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

“The government regrets the decisions taken” at a weekend ECOWAS summit in the Ghanaian capital Accra, it said. ECOWAS on Sunday called on the junta to honour a timetable for a return to democracy and “decided to sanction all those implicated in the delay” in organising elections set for February 27.

ECOWAS imposes travel ban, assets freeze on Mali coup leadersTHE Economic Community of West African States have slammed sanctions on the leaders of the military coup in Mali for shifting the date for the presidential and legislative elections earlier fixed for next February. Sleepy ECOWAS can never treat a disease. They only treat symptoms. One way or the other, the forces against injustice will always hide behind 'democracy' to scuttle efforts against their tentacles spread in various governments. They can do that but pretend not to see African heads of states that oversee genocides, reckless abuse of human rights not to mention staggering corruption. Good for the army they use to perpetrate these genocides. Keep killing innocent people for your oppressors you hear. Olodo.
