According to recent research, Nigeria has the second-largest gambling market in Africa and it’s mostly due to the fact that the majority of the general public is indulging in sports betting. In 2022, more than 80% of Nigerians placed bets on the football World Cup that took place in Qatar, and the same is expected this summer when the European Championship starts in Germany in June.
Edward Howarth, Lead Writer for DashTickets, said he revealed a lot of new information when he was conducting his research for the study. “It’s a known fact that Nigerians are sports punters and that they’re placing small bets. Everyone knows that. They do this because they need the money to pay for their daily needs, as they need supplemental income and sports betting is viewed as the best way to get it.
A recent study found that 36% of adults in Nigeria have gambled at least once in their lives, and that 53% of these people – or 19% of all adults – are daily gamblers. Almost 52% of people in Nigeria have bet on sports at least once in the past 12 months.
