In times such as this, when the entire world is battling with the Coronavirus pandemic , certain things must be done to contain its spread due to its easy mode of transmission and measures are being taken worldwide to prevent the spread of this ravaging pandemic.

However, issues of concern have been raised by prominent figures such as Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka and lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, among others. The bone of contention is the legality or otherwise of the presidential directive. The president has no power to unilaterally lock down a state, as there is no war or emergency, Prof Soyinka posited.

Inasmuch as Soyinka and others want due process to be followed, what is at stake here is the lives of Nigerians and those residing in the country. Truthfully, this is a ‘war’ of sorts and it is not until Nigerians start dying exponentially that we should realise that desperate times call for desperate measures. In the light of that, I feel the lockdown, as directed by the president, is needful at this time.

Meanwhile, the Vice President of Nigeria and lawyer, Prof Yemi Osinbajo , has maintained that the president did not contravene any law by issuing the directive. According to him, the Quarantine Act of 1926 actually makes provision for such lockdown directives.
