The Lagos State Government has said it has inaugurated a team of enumerators to monitor gas outlets as part of the move to curb the recurrence of gas explosion in the state.
The Director General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, said this on Monday during a meeting with security and safety experts in Alausa, Ikeja. Mojola said the move would help curb indiscriminate sitting of gas plants in residential areas and prevent disasters. He said, “Explosion can occur when gases are adulterated, cylinders are mishandled or when industrial and cooking gases are used close to sources of ignition. Other causes are proliferation of gas retail outlets, as well as improper training of operators on safe handling of gas.”
Mojola added that a safety audit would be conducted, saying, “This will identify all hazards and unsafe practices that give rise to risks and incidents in the sector. Once these risks are removed or properly managed, rate of incidents will be eliminated or drastically reduced.”
