Jigawa LG poll uncertain as N378m scam rocks JISIEC | The Guardian Nigeria News - Nigeria and World News

Members of the commission were allegedly involved in a scam, which threatens tomorrow’s council elections.

This might not be unconnected with the taxing of the 27 local councils to the tune of N382 million for the elections. JISIEC officials allegedly diverted the monies, paid in two tranches by the chief executives of the 27 councils, to personal use.Governor Muhammad Abubakar had urged JISIEC to source 60 per cent of its total budget for the polls, while the state government would provide the balance for the smooth conduct of the polls.

The commission had budgeted N600 million for the polls, but it was slashed, where it was agreed that the commission would source for 60 per cent of the commitment. Sources close to the commission had informed The Guardian: “We did a realistic budgets which stood at N600 million. We contacted state government for fund. After long waiting and time was not on our side, we requested an audience with the governor. After discussions, JISIEC asked the 27 councils in the state to fund the election.

“We shared the 60 per cent to the 27 local councils in which each was taxed N14 million. The payment was divided into two instalments in which they settled in April and May, making a total of N384 million.”When contacted, the chairman of JISIEC, Adamu Ibrahim, through the Director, Media and Public Affairs, Habibu Adamu, said: “I am delegated to inform you that management is in crucial meeting, neither the chairman nor any of the commissioner to talk to you.
