International Women’s Day: Less than 5% women in National Assembly – CDD laments

The call from the civil society group comes as Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the International Women’s Day.

Director, CDD, Idayat Hassan, while reflecting on Nigeria’s progress since democracy and post-Beijing Platform Action advised that the right approach be adopted to empower women to attain Sustainable Development Goals. She also asked women groups involved in girls’ rights and women’s development to pool resources together and work to positively impact on common objectives.

This year’s celebration themed: “I am generation equality: Realising women’s rights” coincides with 25 years post-Beijing Platform for Action . “While progress has been slow, positive rays of hope exist with more women running for offices, more women excelling in entrepreneurship, STEM and the tech space in Nigeria and all over the world.

“A more dynamic approach which would tackle all forms of roadblocks women face in getting into political and appointive offices and in the long run increase the low number of women in politics.
