The Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria has decried the alleged illegal activities of loggers in the Omo Forest Reserve J4, in the Ijebu-East Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Addressing newsmen on the activities of the illegal loggers, representative of the Director General of the institute, Dr Tayo Oyelowo, raised the alarm that the reserve would soon join other seven moribund forest reserves in the state if drastic steps were not taken to curb the illegal activities. He lamented that the institute had notified the state government through the Ministry of Forestry, but there was no difference. He said, “I am here this morning to represent the Director General Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria who is a also a focal point of Map National Committee in Nigeria and at the same time, the Chairman Map International Coordinating Council, that means he is the Chairman of Map and Biotech Programmes under UNESCO throughout the World.
“I also wrote a letter around July this year and the Governor on behalf of the Commissioner for forestry in the State promised to make sure that the Illegal activities are stopped but unfortunately very recently one man called Tutu Ajayi was apprehended within the Biosphere reserve.
