Opeolu Stephen Akinola is a visually impaired ICT consultant, musician and public speaker. In this interview, he tellshow he has been able to overcome some of the obstacles that come with being visually impaired in NigeriaI think I was born with it, but it was progressive blindness. When I was younger I could read the Bible, but as I grew older, it became worse. I still see a bit but it is very faint.

If I wasn’t blind I would have gone into technical things like building cars and construction. I would have been an engineer; I used to help people repair their bicycles. Interestingly, ICT makes me do some of the things I like; repairing computers. I still fix electrical appliances in the house; maybe if I wasn’t blind, I would have been doing it professionally. One of the things that have really helped me is the Internet.

I also remember one time I went to fix a computer, and one man came there and was furious and questioning me for touching the computer. Apparently he used to work on it before and was failing at it. I fixed the computer and he wanted to know who I was; he was shocked that a blind person could fix what he couldn’t fix.I used to work at a computer brail centre in 1995; I noticed that our computers were always breaking down. I got a computer engineer and told him to teach me how to fix a computer.

A lot of things in technology are things that can be felt; if you touch something very well, you will know how it was designed. In some cases, I may not be able to feel. At such times, I always ask for sighted assistance. You sing, you are into ICT consulting, and public speaking, which one of them brings you more money?
