To mark UN World Teachers Day, teachers around the world are sharing their stories of success, despite working in challenging environments. Here, teacher Cecilia shares her story of how it feels to be a teacher in Nigeria, as part of the campaign #TeachersTransformLives.
I’ve been a teacher for 25 years and now I teach Primary 2. I had plenty of teaching experience prior to joining this school, however only recently have I become fully motivated and happy. This is because I can see the change that I’m making on my pupils, who one day will be the future of Lagos. At my previous schools, teachers were required to compile their own individual research on the subject they teach, make notes on the research and then distribute this to the pupils to read. It was my own idea. I did not know what was good way to do this or what content was best. This method was not good for making me feel right, and not good in motivating the pupils. Giving notes to pupils for them to read, without teaching the content was not positive for me or for the children.
The way I teach is also a lot more pupil-centred than at my previous school. I have been taught and trained how to get the best out of the children; I did not use this approach before. I know that all pupils are different, and have different abilities, so I must be careful when speaking to all of my pupils. Always being kind, always lovely with them so they feel encouraged. If I can tell that some pupils are finding the lesson hard, I always speak to them individually, maybe in break time.
