Hypertension is one of the two diseases with the appellation of ‘silent killers,’ the other one is diabetes. It is medically regarded as a ‘silent killer’ because a person may be hypertensive and yet appear to be in good health. But in reality that person may be closer to the grave than being alive.
High blood pressure is usually symptomless, but its long term effect on the walls of the arteries hardens the arteries, thus reducing blood and oxygen supply to the heart, and in effect leads to the development of angina , heart attack, heart failure and irregular heart beats. Hypertension can also block or burst the arteries supplying blood and oxygen to the brain and in the process results in stroke.
Most people with hypertension are unaware of it, because they won’t have any symptoms or warning signs that may suggest any health problem. Hence, the reason why it is called ‘a silent killer.’ However, when hypertension does show symptoms, the commonest symptoms are nose bleeds, early morning headaches, buzzing in the ear, vision changes, irregular heart beats etc. And when severe, it causes easy-fatigability, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, confusion, chest pains and muscle tremors.
