The House of Representatives is set to probe the secret accounts allegedly operated by the Nigeria Port Authority with the Unity Bank of Nigeria to collect revenue from vessels.
The resolution of the House followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Rep. Kolawole Lawal informing the House of the controversies generated by a whistle-blower, who claimed that while acting in line with the whistleblower policy of the Federal government, he duly informed, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation , about a hidden or secret account operated by the Nigerian Ports Authority in Unity Bank to collect revenue generated from sea vessels.
“Subsequently based on the advice of the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation , a written agreement was executed between the representative of the whistle-blower and the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation , as evidence of the transaction.“The Nigerian Ports Authority in response to these allegations admitted it operates an account with Unity Bank Plc Lagos Branch, but denied the sum of $1,034,515,000.03 as alleged by the Whistle-blower.
“The Nigerian Ports Authority claimed that upon the determination of the case at the Supreme Court, the judgement Creditors continued with Garnishee process which resulted in the payment … from the account mentioned by them to the judgment Creditor on the 4th December 2019 in line with the Gamishee Order absolute”.
