The last leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, who brought the Cold War to a peaceful end died on Tuesday in Moscow, Russia at age 91.

Gorbachev, who was in power between 1985 and 1991 and helped bring US-Soviet relations out of a deep freeze, was the last surviving Cold War leader.Late Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was born on 2 March 1931 in the village of Privolnoye, Stavropol Krai, then in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, one of the constituent republics of the Soviet Union.

Gorbachev was protective of his private life and avoided inviting people to his home. Gorbachev cherished his wife, who in turn was protective of him. He was an involved parent and grandparent. Ideologically, Gorbachev initially adhered to Marxism–Leninism, but moved towards social democracy by the early 1990s.Gorbachev, in power between 1985 and 1991, helped bring US-Soviet relations out of a deep freeze and was the last surviving Cold War leader.

He made no public statements on Russia’s military action in Ukraine, though his foundation called for “an early cessation hostilities and immediate start of peace negotiations”.As the USSR collapsed, Gorbachev was superseded by the younger Boris Yeltsin, who became post-Soviet Russia’s first president.
