The growing trend of students getting first-class certificates for academic excellence in our various universities has drawn the angst of some concerned individuals in society. Based on the number of reports I have read on this particular issue, online and in the newspapers, I can perceive that the issue is laced with divided opinions.
The system of grading first-class differs from university to university all over the world. Take for instance, in the United Kingdom their own first-class starts from 3.70 – 4.00. In Ethiopia, it starts from 4.4 – 5.0 and their second-class upper division starts from 3.60 – 4.39. In Nigeria, the University of Ibadan uses between 6.0 -7.0 as its own first-class grade while some other universities use between 4.50 – 5.00 for it.
There is the tactic called “back to sender” or “la cram” “la pour”; they are an expression that interests the semanticists. It means cramming of notes taken in class, word for word for the purpose of continuous assessment test or examination and everything crammed before exams will then be written down in the examination hall.
I was glad I didn't finish with first class. Two of my distinction rivals back then are still battling with interviews. Me I just enter with my 2'1, do some practicals and boom!
True. Many graduates have the mentality of working under someone as soon as they are done with school. Thank God for the Internet and entrepreneurship education being taught on the streets.
