The Federal Government has approved the upgrade of the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, to a Teaching Hospital. The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, Malam Abdulmuminu Bawa Yauri, confirmed the upgrade.

Yauri stated the hospital's management, led by Dr Aliyu Hamza Balarabe, welcomed the decision and pledged its full support for the success of the upgrade, stating that the move is aimed at expanding the scope of healthcare services available to the people of Kebbi State.

He stated that this upgrade will allow medical students from the Federal University Birnin Kebbi, FUBK to use the facility for their medical practicals and other health professional needs, noting that, “With this upgrade, the hospital's referral level has been increased to meet the standards of a higher tertiary referral centre. The Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, already serves as a tertiary level referral hospital.
