Two Saturdays ago, at the NUJ Press Freedom and Good Governance Awards in Abuja, Information minister Mohammed Idris struggled to uphold the Bola Tinubu administration’s promise to ensure press freedom. He was only partially successful. The past few weeks have seen the police and the military launch assaults on press freedom on a scale that replicates the era of military dictatorship.
So far, based on the few cases of abductions of journalists reported since the beginning of this year, the administration’s promise has been partially kept. The media have made no effort to blindly defend the abducted journalists; they have only insisted that the provisions of the law should be followed in dealing with their alleged infractions.
