Experts in the education sector have expressed concern over the number of students in faculties of education in the nation’s higher institutions.

They warned that unless something is done to address the inherent challenges, it may affect the quality of products being churned out and invariably the nation’s education system.

For instance in 2018, at the University of Ilorin , between four and 388 candidates applied to the faculty, with English Education leading at 388, while French Education had four candidates. Lagos State University in 2017 had about 82 candidates applying for its education courses, with Education Accounting leading with 82 candidates.

He however admitted that most candidates do not like to study education because of poor teachers’ welfare. “You cannot compare education with medicine, what they want in medicine is physics, chemistry and biology, while education requires five basic credits. So, if for instance, a candidate who applied to study Biochemistry could not meet the requirements and opted for physics education, and the candidate did not offer physics at O’level, the candidate will be denied admission.
