Doctors employed by the Lagos State Government under the aegis of Medical Guild have urged the government not to remove doctors undertaking housemanship and National Youth Service Corps from the Scheme of Service.

The Chairman of the Guild, Dr Oluwajimi Sodipo, at a briefing on Sunday this decision, if not reversed would further increase brain drain in the medical profession. “The association noted with surprise the release of a circular titled ‘Internship Programme In Public/Civil Service,’ with reference number CIR/ HOS/21/Vol.1/052 from the office of the Head of Service in Lagos State where it was stated that medical doctors undertaking housemanship and NYSC doctors would be removed from the Scheme of Service following a National Council of Establishment decision.

“The deleterious implication of the circular on wages, the fundamental structure of the medical profession and confidence in the health sector was thoroughly discussed. The contents of the circular was also observed to be at variance with any known international best practice and was causing further uncertainty in the health sector. It was also noted to be at variance with the THEMES agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” Sodipo said.

This is one of the issues why the NARD must go on strike.... It is ridiculous to sack these set of Drs. They are the first line of contact in the hospitals....
