Editorial: NUC should halt the processing of more universities and rather standardise the existing ones. It should push for universities that are adept in research; aimed at developing manpower in line with the needs of the country instead of credentialism

It is curious and even provocative that the authorities and the people of Nigeria have not been considering groundswell of informed commentaries that Nigeria needs better, not more universities at this time that disruptive technologies daily shape economic development through innovation – triggered by research.

Currently, there are 170 universities in Nigeria – 43 owned by the Federal Government; 48, state government; and 79, privately owned out of which 38 are faith-based . For instance, in the aviation sector today, aircraft are serviced abroad in Africa’s most populous nation.

Again, while it is important to improve access to tertiary education, the issue of quality should be of concern to all. While there are good private universities, there are concerns that some of them have fallen short of expectation as their quality and standard of education have been markedly compromised.

This situation calls for urgent action, because the situation is even more terrifying with obvious misplacement of priorities and celebration of mediocrity pushing the country’s education to the edge of a precipice.

We don't need more universities. They should try and equip the existing ones and bring them up to standard. What do they need new ones for? I just wonder who advises these people. I am sure if you check why they want to grant new license, maybe its to their friends

Many of our universities are like some religious centers which are only interested in money making other than main purpose of establishment

, we need both new universities and standardizing the existing ones

This is so true & urgent too...

Agreed absolutely, no more need for new universities. Fees to be increased in the existing ones for better quality education and student loan board to be established for those that need it. That is how it is done all over the world. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel.

Is it true that one of such requests is from FL Aisha Buhari for an MBuhari University? I read this in the papers weeks back.

We don't have a quality university, why not invest more in the major federal universities, increase tuition cos education isn't cheap and also increase the learning standards there. No need for more private, profit hungry universities.
